Total War: Warhammer 3 PC Review - A Glorious Finale

I may unleash a colorful tidal wave of devastation on the earth in Total War: Warhammer 3, with rage-filled Bloodthirsters, swift Daemonettes of Slaanesh, slim avian spellcasters, and pustulent Nurgle monsters battling side by side in a beautiful show of Chaos Undivided’s strength. Before each combat, I may also identify the Daemon Prince leading my army and freely swap between a wide range of limbs, armor, and weaponry.

The Daemons of Chaos were a final and unexpected addition to Total War: Warhammer 3’s list of playable races, and they represent, in many ways, what this third installment is in the context of the trilogy – the game that ends with a bang and a roar, and a giant ball of pus exploding on top of tens of unlucky individuals before being turned into paste by a Soul Grinder.

It’s a fantastic conclusion to a trilogy that has elevated Creative Assembly’s grand strategy series to new heights, owing to an obvious match. Large-scale battles, several sorts of magic, and realistic unit models with largely amazing animations that make fighting wonderful to look at – it’s all here, along with a few modifications that solve previous flaws and enhance some other areas.

Total War: Warhammer 3’s roster of launch races is the trilogy’s biggest. Deliciously daemonic, yet having enough good guy energy for those adamant about playing on the objectively wrong side, its seven picks – eight if you pre-order – give you a great amount of choice in terms of both campaign and battle mechanics.

Total War: Warhammer 3 PC Review - A Glorious Finale

“The core campaign mechanism in Warhammer 3 seems pretty involved, since you’re advancing into foreign land rather than waiting for Chaos to siege you a lot, and the four kingdoms do thematically match their gods.”

In our preview, I spoke about the Daemons of Chaos and Cathay, with the former being the game’s highlight for me and the race I picked during my initial gameplay. It gives up research and more complicated mechanics in exchange for five Daemonic Glory tracks. Your Legendary Lord may freely equip an increasing number of bodily parts that let him perform varied tasks in combat as you consecrate wins and towns to one of the gods or Chaos Undivided. You also have access to all of the game’s daemonic troops, making this the ideal race for sampling all of Chaos’s tastes.

The lineups of the four distinct Chaos gods, on the other hand, are a little more restricted and specialized. Exalted varieties of daemons may seem a touch too samey at times, but they’re backed up by more complicated game rules that emphasize each god’s essence. Tzeentch’s troops specialize on battling at range and utilizing a recharging barrier that shields initial damage, while Tzeentch may dissolve alliances, influence the winds of magic, or outright steal villages from enemy groups.

Slaanesh uses cults to extend his influence and entice opposing troops into switching sides at the outset of engagements, taking advantage of his forces’ rapid speed and strong flanking ability. His chariots and troops may be deceivingly lethal if you control them right.

Skarbrand, on the other hand, is suffering from Khorne flake withdrawal and is only interested in bringing Slaughter and Carnage to the universe. In order to gather all of the skulls, he razes villages, spawning temporary Blood Host armies who choose a more aggressive tactics. This is mirrored in real conflicts, as the race’s ranged choices are essentially non-existent.

Nurgle’s structures cycle through multiple stages rather than forcing you to actively improve them, which I found very intriguing. Moving to higher tiers every few rounds before returning to their original forms provides you less control over which troops you may acquire – to some degree – but it also allows you to recruit high-level units like Soul Grinders sooner than other races. His troops are promptly recruited, but with a lesser strength, allowing him a slower overall playstyle.

Kislev stood out among the non-Chaos factions because of their competent hybrid infantry that can transition between ranged and melee weaponry. This group also places heroes on bears and covers most bases, so it’s a nice place to start if you’re hesitant. Their “conventional” campaign mechanics urge you to handle an internal war between the Ice Court and Grand Orthodoxy by gaining public support, while also enabling you to customize the attributes of your heroes and lords as they train.

Whichever race you select, they are all attempting to capture the might of Kislev’s dying deity, Ursun. Be’lakor, a well-known Warhammer villain, has him imprisoned in the Forge of Souls, which you can’t access at first. Ursun roars every so often, allowing entrance to the Realms of Chaos and rapid travel throughout the planet. Furthermore, they have the ability to summon hostile demon armies into mortal realms.

The rifts are only open for a short time, so take advantage of it by venturing into the domains of the four Chaos Gods, defeating their champions, and claiming their souls in the new Survival bouts. These are three-stage battles in which you must capture points and then hold them against waves of opponents. You may not only summon reinforcements, but also construct barriers and towers to strengthen your defenses.

Total War: Warhammer 3 PC Review - A Glorious Finale

As you rotate between the roles of attacker and defense, they take place over a number of aesthetically breathtaking stretches and may see a ridiculous quantity of troops come to the field. The opposing Daemon Princes are formidable foes, but because to the large number of reinforcements I could deploy, I had no trouble defeating them on regular level.

Each world has its unique set of hurdles that you must overcome before engaging in these fights. Fighting inferior armies amid Tzeentch’s twisted plains to find sigils for paired teleporters that link fragmented landmasses. Fighting armies of various races in Khorne’s domain is the only way to gain enough Bloodshed to be recognized worthy of entering the Brass Citadel.

Slaanesh seduces you via the six rings of seduction, luring you in with progressively potent rewards in return for abandoning his champion. Finally, before entering Nurgle’s garden, you must endure high attrition and combat his minions on your way to a location that gives immunity.

Each Realm of Chaos also gives you debuffs for spending time there, as well as chances to swiftly replace soldiers lost when fighting the daemons who live there. They aren’t very long, but they do demand you to assess the status of your army and decide when to launch the great fight.

Because other races will be vying for the soul, knowing whether to encamp or sprint for a gift might be the difference between claiming it and failing. I had to slay N’Kari as I fought my way through Khorne’s domain, since he got closer to really seizing the soul. Needless to say, this sparked a conflict that lasted several turns outside of the Blood God’s territory.

Only your main lord may enter the Realms of Chaos, thus armies are necessary to guard your towns from mortal opponents as well as daemons who emerge from the rifts. You can avoid tragedy by quickly shutting rifts, but if one opens near your border, you may be able to use the raging daemonic hordes to damage opponents. The stronger these invading daemonic armies get as you go through the game.

Because you’re advancing into foreign territory rather than waiting for Chaos to siege you, Warhammer 3’s major campaign mechanism seems rather intricate, and the four kingdoms do thematically match their gods. That said, I’m not sure how fresh they stay through numerous playthroughs, because the only thing that could change is the makeup of your army and the strategies it utilizes.

In Total War: Warhammer 3, siege engagements are also given considerable emphasis. Aside from new maps, they’ve been updated to enable defenders to construct barriers and towers at certain areas, obstructing passages through large and smaller communities, benefiting their soldiers, and debuffing their opponents. You construct them using supplies, a resource that progressively recharges over time, much as in survival combat. However, the defensive structures in your towns play a role here as well.

Total War: Warhammer 3 PC Review - A Glorious Finale

“Even before the Mortal Empires campaign transforms it into a giant of a game, Total War: Warhammer 3 makes it easy to squander endless hours dripping blood over its lush plains and rocky mountains.”

Towers and barricades may be destroyed by direct damage or by seizing the control points they’re tied to. This does give siege warfare a new dimension, but it doesn’t fundamentally alter how they play most of the time. Nonetheless, having a barrier blocking a direct path to the center as archers shower arrows down from above will make you ponder where your flyers go next while the rest of your forces either attempt to tear it down or circle around will make you reconsider where your fliers go next.

Despite the fact that diplomacy still takes a back seat to conquest, Total War: Warhammer 3 is the greatest of the series, owing to a slew of new features. A fast deal button allows you to view all of the transactions you can close at a glance. Another option allows you to balance out particular transactions by automatically adding the amount of primary currency needed to persuade the other side to accept.

You may also discover who other races consider to be a serious danger, which makes them more inclined to join coalitions against them. Trespassing armies may now be advised to leave your area, allowing you to declare war without suffering relationship penalties after two rounds. You may also threaten races to persuade them to make a contract, but if they aren’t impressed by your might and refuse it, this can lead into a war.

In ally settlements, outposts enable you to acquire troops from their rosters in return for a currency called Allegiance, which rises over time. Completing allied tasks, which you may do anytime you choose, is another way to get it. It’s a mechanism that allows you to spice up your roster or fill in the holes in your army.

You may even ask friends for troops and take control of them for a few rounds. They’re all minor tweaks, but they make engaging with the other forces on the map (in a non-violent manner) more enjoyable.

During my time as the Daemons of Chaos, I was able to form a common front with Skarbrand and N’kari, both of which were quite receptive to war coordinating objectives. This was especially useful since every non-Chaos force naturally despised us, and the Empire and Kislev were always a danger.

Custom battles are also looking promising, with a wide range of maps spanning numerous categories – from land to chokepoint, quest, and survivor fights – allowing you to try out different army compositions against the AI or pals.

Performance

Total War: Warhammer 3 PC Review - A Glorious Finale

Total War: Warhammer III experienced a few glitches on an i7-8700K, 16 GB RAM, and Nvidia RTX [email protected], especially towards the end of the game. The only flaws I saw in the early game, when everything was set to high, were intermittent stutters while zooming in and out.

Things became choppy as the game progressed, as coalitions exposed more of the map and concentrated enemy forces deployed many armies and heroes to my provinces. Turning the settings down to medium and eliminating SSAO was the only way I could obtain a constant 60 FPS.

The great majority of 20v20 bouts went well, with a few rare instances of what seemed to be visual slowness. In survival fights, the framerate dropped to approximately 40-45, but only when the number of troops exceeded the typical 20, putting a lot of models on the battlefield.

Accessibility

VERDICT OF TOTAL WAR: WARHAMMER 3

The only significant “downside” of Total War: Warhammer 3 is that it is the last installment in an established trilogy that (successfully) iterates on its predecessor’s framework without substantially changing it. There’s not much here to persuade you to alter your mind if you don’t like its simplified empire management, fantastical setting, and occasionally floaty-feeling combat.

Aside from that, it’s the best the trilogy has ever been at launch, with a diverse cast of races that make up for some of their more restricted unit options with exciting campaign mechanics or pure daemonic greatness. Its vast campaign goals keep you on your toes, as you launch expeditions into the lands of the Chaos Gods, constantly contending with other races, while enhancements to sieges and diplomacy round out the experience.

Even before the Mortal Empires campaign transforms it into a giant of a game, Total War: Warhammer 3 makes it easy to waste endless hours dripping blood over its lush plains and rocky mountains. This is one you won’t want to miss if you’re even vaguely interested in the series or Warhammer Fantasy.
