Large-scale battles, several sorts of magic, and realistic unit models with largely amazing animations that make fighting wonderful to look at – it’s all here, along with a few modifications that solve previous flaws and enhance some other areas.
Total War: Warhammer 3’s roster of launch races is the trilogy’s biggest. Deliciously daemonic, yet having enough good guy energy for those adamant about playing on the objectively wrong side, its seven picks – eight if you pre-order – give you a great amount of choice in terms of both campaign and battle mechanics.

It gives up research and more complicated mechanics in exchange for five Daemonic Glory tracks. Your Legendary Lord may freely equip an increasing number of bodily parts that let him perform varied tasks in combat as you consecrate wins and towns to one of the gods or Chaos Undivided. Skarbrand, on the other hand, is suffering from Khorne flake withdrawal and is only interested in bringing Slaughter and Carnage to the universe. In order to gather all of the skulls, he razes villages, spawning temporary Blood Host armies who choose a more aggressive tactics. This is mirrored in real conflicts, as the race’s ranged choices are essentially non-existent.
Nurgle’s structures cycle through multiple stages rather than forcing you to actively improve them, which I found very intriguing. Moving to higher tiers every few rounds before returning to their original forms provides you less control over which troops you may acquire – to some degree – but it also allows you to recruit high-level units like Soul Grinders sooner than other races. His troops are promptly recruited, but with a lesser strength, allowing him a slower overall playstyle.
Kislev stood out among the non-Chaos factions because of their competent hybrid infantry that can transition between ranged and melee weaponry. This group also places heroes on bears and covers most bases, so it’s a nice place to start if you’re hesitant. Their “conventional” campaign mechanics urge you to handle an internal war between the Ice Court and Grand Orthodoxy by gaining public support, while also enabling you to customize the attributes of your heroes and lords as they train.
Whichever race you select, they are all attempting to capture the might of Kislev’s dying deity, Ursun. Be’lakor, a well-known Warhammer villain, has him imprisoned in the Forge of Souls, which you can’t access at first. Ursun roars every so often, allowing entrance to the Realms of Chaos and rapid travel throughout the planet. Furthermore, they have the ability to summon hostile demon armies into mortal realms.
The rifts are only open for a short time, so take advantage of it by venturing into the domains of the four Chaos Gods, defeating their champions, and claiming their souls in the new Survival bouts. These are three-stage battles in which you must capture points and then hold them against waves of opponents. You may not only summon reinforcements, but also construct barriers and towers to strengthen your defenses.

Aside from new maps, they’ve been updated to enable defenders to construct barriers and towers at certain areas, obstructing passages through large and smaller communities, benefiting their soldiers, and debuffing their opponents. You construct them using supplies, a resource that progressively recharges over time, much as in survival combat. However, the defensive structures in your towns play a role here as well.

Towers and barricades may be destroyed by direct damage or by seizing the control points they’re tied to. This does give siege warfare a new dimension, but it doesn’t fundamentally alter how they play most of the time. Nonetheless, having a barrier blocking a direct path to the center as archers shower arrows down from above will make you ponder where your flyers go next while the rest of your forces either attempt to tear it down or circle around will make you reconsider where your fliers go next.
Despite the fact that diplomacy still takes a back seat to conquest, Total War: Warhammer 3 is the greatest of the series, owing to a slew of new features. A fast deal button allows you to view all of the transactions you can close at a glance. Custom battles are also looking promising, with a wide range of maps spanning numerous categories – from land to chokepoint, quest, and survivor fights – allowing you to try out different army compositions against the AI or pals.
Total War: Warhammer III experienced a few glitches on an i7-8700K, 16 GB RAM, and Nvidia RTX [email protected], especially towards the end of the game. The only flaws I saw in the early game, when everything was set to high, were intermittent stutters while zooming in and out.
Things became choppy as the game progressed, as coalitions exposed more of the map and concentrated enemy forces deployed many armies and heroes to my provinces. Turning the settings down to medium and eliminating SSAO was the only way I could obtain a constant 60 FPS.
The great majority of 20v20 bouts went well, with a few rare instances of what seemed to be visual slowness. In survival fights, the framerate dropped to approximately 40-45, but only when the number of troops exceeded the typical 20, putting a lot of models on the battlefield.
