The Sims has been one of the most popular and groundbreaking games in history, turning an idea into a multi-million dollar franchise. With new generations coming up with their own ideas for what kind of game they want to play, it’s no wonder that there have been over 250 million copies sold worldwide since its release back in 2000. Another variant on the classic The Sims is set to launch this year: The Elder Scrolls Online Tamriel Unlimited MMO. What will 2019 hold for immersive sims?

The “list of immersive sims” is a list that compiles the 10 best immersive sims. The list includes games such as Fallout, Skyrim, and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided.

The 10 Best Immersive Sims (2022)

The immersive sim is one of the most sophisticated and exciting types of games among all the many game genres. Immersive simulations are noted for providing players a lot of leeway and flexibility in how they approach their goals.

Is that, however, all there is to immersive simulations? Is such a vast genre even feasible to define? What are the greatest immersive sim games available? If you’ve never played one before, which one should you start with?

In this rating of the top 10 greatest immersive sims, I’ll explain all you need to know and more!

Preface: What Is an Immersive Simulation?

Let’s clarify what an immersive simulation is before we get into the meat and potatoes of this post. There is a lot of disagreement over what constitutes an immersive simulation, and various individuals will have different definitions. For the purpose of argument, I’ll start by telling you what I believe to be an immersive simulation. We’ll utilize it as a starting point for this rating in the future.

An immersive simulation, in my opinion, is a game genre that not only offers players with several methods to complete goals, but also with various tools and systems that may be combined to generate emergent gameplay. These interactions between various tools and systems might result in solutions to issues that the creators did not design.

What’s most significant here is the final section. Fallout: New Vegas and Bioshock: Infinite aren’t immersive simulations in my opinion. Fallout: New Vegas has a lot of different ways to solve challenges, which is fantastic. However, there isn’t much in the way of unexpected solutions/emergent gameplay (at least, not very often). In addition, Bioshock: Infinite is… Well… Later, I’ll go into more detail about it.

The Best Immersive Sims, from Good to Best

With that out of the way, let’s get to our list of the top ten finest immersive simulations!

20210512115025_2-1024x576 Screenshot of Teardown gameplay Tuxedo Labs courtesy of HGG / Koby Gibson Ross

  • Tuxedo Labs is the creator of this game.
  • The film will be released on October 29th, 2020.
  • 4 GB file size
  • Steam is the source of this information.

Let’s start with a game that I don’t think is getting enough attention. Teardown is a destruction simulator based on voxels. In the campaign, you play as a down-on-his-luck guy who is forced to do less-than-legal occupations to make ends meet. You’ve been assigned to rob a number of different sites. You’ll have to make the most of the tools you have at your disposal, as well as the setting itself.

How Does the Gameplay Work?

Each mission has a specific goal for you to complete, such as stealing artworks or demolishing a brick structure. If you take or destroy a vital item, alarms will go out on certain levels. This challenges you to prepare ahead of time in order to fulfill all of the goals before the cops come to arrest you.

What makes this game so enjoyable is the enormous amount of flexibility you have in completing your goals. This is performed via the many tools available to you as well as the numerous ways in which you may interact with the global area. Did I say the environment is completely destructible?

In the picture above, I used a crane to assist me climb up to a difficult-to-reach place, then used my sledgehammer to bust a hole in the wall, enabling me to access the goal inside. This is only one of the numerous player-driven choices available to you for finishing each task!

Bloodlines in Vampire: The Masquerade

  • Troika Games is the creator of this game.
  • The movie will be released on November 16th, 2004.
  • Size of the file: 3.3 GB
  • Steam is the source of this information.

Next up, we have a classic game many long-time fans of immersive sims will recognize. Bloodlines in Vampire: The Masquerade is an RPG/immersive sim hybrid where you play as a vampire in a dark, dystopian version of Los Angeles. Gamers have a huge amount of freedom in how they role-play their character and interact with the world at large.

How Does the Gameplay Work?

You may, for example, pick which of the different clans you want to be a part of. This, in turn, affects how you connect with other individuals and how you traverse the city. You will be compelled to walk via the sewers of Los Angeles if you pick the Nosferatu Clan, since members of this clan are repulsive and cannot be seen by people.

There is also a huge amount of choice in how you want to build your character’s playstyle. You can be sneaky, go for a melee build, solve problems using guns, etc. Some people may argue that Bloodlines in Vampire: The Masquerade is more of an RPG than an immersive sim. It’s hard to really say, but given all its various systems working together, I’d say it still counts as an immersive sim.

It’s Infested With Bugs

The only reason this game is only ranked 9th is because of its many problems and issues. That, plus the fact that, owing to its age, the gameplay may be clumsy at times. If you intend on purchasing the game, be sure you download the Unofficial Patch!

2nd Pathologic

20200503135112_1-1024x576 Screenshot of 2nd Pathologic gameplay Ice-Pick Lodge courtesy of HGG / Koby Gibson Ross

  • Ice-Pick Lodge is the developer.
  • The film will be released on May 23rd, 2019.
  • Size of the file: 25 GB
  • Steam is the source of this information.

Has a video game ever given you an existential crisis before? No? Well, you’ll get one if you play 2nd Pathologic! I don’t know how to describe this game, other than it is a depression simulator set in Eastern Europe. It takes place in a fictional town that is being ravaged by a plague. You are a doctor, tasked with curing the plague and saving the town from being torn apart.

How Does the Gameplay Work?

In terms of gameplay, it’s more of a survival horror game than an immersive sim. To remain alive, you must maintain your hunger, thirst, and reputation among the natives. It’s a tough game to master, and it’s not for the faint of heart. When you consider all of the tough, ethically ambiguous decisions you’ll have to make, you’ll begin to believe this game is trying to get you.

This is another game where I’m not sure whether I’d call it an immersive sim. Regardless, you should still play it. It’s a complex game set in a bizarrely strange environment. You’ll have a great encounter thanks to the well-written language and characters.

Cruelty Squad (Cruelty Squad) is a

20211005101141_1-1024x576 Screenshot of Cruelty Squad (Cruelty Squad) is a gameplay Consumer Softproducts courtesy of HGG / Koby Gibson Ross

  • Consumer Softproducts is the creator of this product.
  • The film will be released on June 15th, 2021.
  • 1000 megabytes of data
  • Steam is the source of this information.

Next up on our ranking for the top-10 best immersive sims we have an indie-gem known as Cruelty Squad (Cruelty Squad) is a. Don’t let the bizarre-looking graphics and UI throw you off. This game is MUCH more than what it looks like on the surface. Set in a corporate dystopian world where immortality has been achieved, you work as an assassin for the subsidiary company known as Cruelty Squad (Cruelty Squad) is a.

How Does the Gameplay Work?

Cruelty Squad (Cruelty Squad) is a features over a dozen unique levels, each with multiple routes for you to take and plenty of secrets to unlock. Before each mission, you can choose which two weapons you can take with you, as well as several different cybernetic augmentations for you to play with and combine in unique ways.

The augmentations are what make this game so enjoyable. Simple modifications exist, such as one that turns you invisible and another that raises your jump height. However, there are several that have a significant impact on how you play the game. A grappling hook is available for swinging across the map. Also, when you contact the ground, it eliminates any falling damage and bounces you up in the air!

20211004113839_1-1024x576 Talking to a NPC in Cruelty Squad (Cruelty Squad) is a Consumer Softproducts courtesy of HGG / Koby Gibson Ross

You may combine all of these powers in a variety of ways, giving you THOUSANDS of potential approaches to tasks. When you combine this with the many pathways I stated before, you’ll never be bored.

It isn’t flawless.

Despite my enthusiasm for the game, there are a few balance flaws. Some of the cybernetic augmentations you use are either powerful or weak, rendering many of them useless. It also discourages you from experimenting with alternative choices after you’ve discovered the optimum path to follow to finish a goal.

Even with its flaws, Cruelty Squad (Cruelty Squad) is a is still a must-play if you love immersive sims, indie games with killer soundtracks, or satirical takes on the effects of late-stage capitalism in a dystopian world where human mortality has been rendered obsolete.

Bioshock 2 is a sequel to Bioshock.

20190921124109_1-1024x576 Screenshot of Bioshock 2 is a sequel to Bioshock. gameplay 2K Marin courtesy of HGG / Koby Gibson Ross

  • 2K Marin is the developer.
  • The film will be released on February 9th, 2010.
  • 11 Gigabytes of data

Now let’s talk about a personal favorite of mine: Bioshock 2 is a sequel to Bioshock.! While the story and characters may not be as good as what we got in the first Bioshock, the improvements to gameplay more than makeup for it. You play as Subject Delta. He is an experimental Big Daddy on a hunt to find his lost little sister and rescue her from Sophia Lamb, a cult leader living in the ruined city of Rapture.

How Does the Gameplay Work?

What many people love about Bioshock 2 is a sequel to Bioshock. is the fact you can use your plasmids and weapons at the same time! This makes the gameplay flow much more smoothly, and it gives gamers more ways to play. Speaking of ways to play, there are plenty of different plasmids and Gene Tonics for you to choose from, much like the first game.

When you include in all of the many environmental dangers and contraptions found in Rapture (cameras, turrets, and so on), you’ll have plenty of opportunities to experiment and kill adversaries in novel ways.

What Are Your Thoughts on Bioshock Infinite?

Many Bioshock fans may be perplexed as to why this game was chosen over Bioshock: Infinite. Simply told, I felt Infinite was a letdown and a significant step backward in the series. The plot and characters were enjoyable, but the gameplay grew increasingly basic and resembled that of a standard shooter. There were fewer options for customizing your setup, and several features were removed.

The way you could have Elizabeth phase things into existence (summoning turrets, cover, medical supplies, etc) was cool, but I wouldn’t consider that emergent gameplay. Something that is a cornerstone of immersive sims. Bioshock 2 is a sequel to Bioshock. perfects the formula of the first game, while still having enough elements to be classified as an immersive sim, something I can’t say the same for Infinite.

Fatalis Arx

0000000938 Screenshot of Fatalis Arx gameplay Image courtesy of Arkane Studios and HGG.

  • Arkane Studios is the creator of this game.
  • The film was released on November 12th, 2002.
  • Size of the file: 750 MB
  • Steam is the source of this information.

Starting our top-five countdown, let’s take a look at Arkane Studios’ first-ever release, Fatalis Arx! This is a classic game with a unique world and backstory. It takes place in a civilization built deep in the underground. The sun has died, and the surface is now a frozen, inhospitable wasteland.

How Does the Gameplay Work?

The gameplay is reminiscent of a classic western RPG. Players may customize their character builds in a variety of ways. Quests may be completed in a number of different ways. You may play as a sly figure who utilizes things in the environment to distract adversaries, a strong wizard who employs numerous spells to kill enemy and solve environmental riddles, or any other character you can imagine!

One of the great things about Fatalis Arx is how you cast spells. Essentially, it works by you drawing out the rune with your mouse cursor! It may seem clunky and strange if you are used to more modern RPGs, but it is very satisfying to use once you get the hang of it.

How well has it held up over time?

This is a game that isn’t for everyone. If you’re new to the game, it might be challenging to get started. Furthermore, the fighting might be clumsy at times. Regardless, if you can look beyond its age, it’s still a highly full and unusual RPG/immersive sim that’s worth your time.

2nd Edition of System Shock

ss_dab721b46238872900cad515bb81aa95d6861da4-1024x576 Screenshot of 2nd Edition of System Shock gameplay Image credit: HGG/Irrational Games

  • Irrational Games is the creator of this game.
  • The film was released on August 11th, 1999.
  • 2 GB file size
  • Steam is the source of this information.

Next up, we have the sequel to a game that practically defined the immersive sim genre, and set the stage for many future titles. I am of course talking about 2nd Edition of System Shock! The game is set in the distant future, and it incorporates many elements of RPG games.

How Does the Gameplay Work?

You may play the game in a number of ways and gain a range of qualities to customize your character. Players may choose from a number of melee and ranged weapons, as well as invest in a variety of talents to improve their powers. Of course, hacking is a feature, but there are also a range of psychic abilities!

What makes this game so great, however, isn’t just the gameplay but its tone and story. The villain is incredibly well written, the enemy designs are horrific, and the overall atmosphere is one of the best out of the survival horror genre. It’s no wonder that this game has such a cult following! 2nd Edition of System Shock is widely regarded as one of the best horror games of all time, and for good reason.

20220210151023_1-1024x576 Screenshot of Dishonored gameplay Image courtesy of Arkane Studios and HGG. / Koby Gibson Ross

  • Arkane Studios is the creator of this game.
  • The film will be released on October 8th, 2012.
  • Size of the file: 9 GB
  • Steam is the source of this information.

Now we have Dishonored, a 2012 game that is one of my personal favorites on this list! This is another another Arkane Studios title that should speak for itself. The game takes set in Dunwall, a fictitious dystopian metropolis. A rat infestation, as well as political corruption, are wreaking havoc on the metropolis. Things don’t seem to be going well for you, either.

You take on the role of Corvo Attano, the empress’s personal guard who was just killed. You’ve been falsely accused of her murder. To restore Dunwall to its former splendor and cleanse your reputation, you must now track down and deal with those who have harmed you.

How Does the Gameplay Work?

You’ll have access to a vast range of tools, as well as some magical abilities! You have the ability to bend time, possess live beings, and teleport short distances, among other things. There are many different ways to play the game! You have the option of being subtle or going all out. You have the option of becoming a lethal assassin or a non-lethal pacifist.

There are many various ways to be creative with kills now that you have all of the tools at your disposal. There are also situational alternatives for dealing with targets, such as poisoning them, making their deaths look to be an accident, or devising a non-violent method of eliminating them!

Actions have consequences.

The coolest part of Dishonored is how your choices effect the environment around you as well as the many mechanisms at work. The number of individuals you murder affects the chaos meter, which ranges from low to high. If you kill too many people, the epidemic will grow, making Dunwall increasingly more dystopian, with more plague victims, guards, and a darker mood and tale.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is a game about the division of mankind.

ss_7e6b2141a3a471872278701a938ba6d1b06964c8-1024x576 Screenshot of Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is a game about the division of mankind. gameplay Image courtesy of HGG and Eidos Montreal.

  • Eidos Montreal is the game’s developer.
  • The film will be released on August 23rd, 2016.
  • Size of the file: 45 GB
  • Steam is the source of this information.

For our second-best game on our ranking for the top-10m immersive sims, let’s take a look at Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is a game about the division of mankind.! Released back in 2016, this entry in the long-running Deus Ex series takes everything we loved about the original. It modernizes things, while still keeping it faithful to the series roots.

How Does the Gameplay Work?

This game, like many immersive simulations, may be completed only by stealth and hacking. You may be a pacifist and take down adversaries without using violence. You have access to a large variety of diverse talents (augmentations) that you may put to creative use.

Is There Anything Else I Should Know?

This game also has a fantastic hub-world, which is easily one of the greatest I’ve seen in recent years. Although the hub-world is modest, it is densely filled with activities to do and hidden surprises for players to discover.

If you want to play the games in chronological sequence, I suggest starting with Deus Ex: Human Revolution. If you’re just interested in the gameplay, I’d recommend getting this one since it improves on its predecessor in a variety of ways.

Predator (2017)

ss_976f1d181de3dc8bc86c78fe900c98be457d0942-1024x576 Screenshot of Prey gameplay Image courtesy of Arkane Studios and HGG.

  • Arkane Studios is the creator of this game.
  • The film will be released on May 4th, 2017.
  • File Size: 20 Gigabytes
  • Steam is the source of this information.

Finally, we have 2017’s Prey at number one on our list of the top ten finest immersive simulations! This is another another game from Arkane Studios. Allow me to explain what Prey is all about if you aren’t already persuaded that they are the lords of current immersive simulators.

How Does the Gameplay Work?

Prey is a science fiction video game set on the Talos 1 space station. The station is overrun by odd alien entities, and you seem to be the sole remaining human on board. You have access to a variety of weapons and gadgets, all of which may be utilized to come up with inventive solutions to challenges.

There’s the glue gun, a one-of-a-kind weapon that fires a fast-hardening material. This tool may be used to slow down adversaries, erect obstacles, and even create stairwells to higher ground! Neuromods are another gaming element that allows you to enhance your character and spec into a multitude of various professions. Hacking, weaponry, healing, and a variety of additional skill trees are available.

You may get special powers from the alien species you’re battling as the game develops. Some of these powers include assuming the form of an inanimate item to hide from foes and a mind-control ability that converts adversaries into friends!

Mooncrash is the prey.

And after you are finished playing the game’s excellent campaign, you can download what I consider to be one of the best DLC’s in gaming history. Mooncrash is the prey. puts you into a simulation of a base on the moon. The DLC gives you several different characters to choose from, each with its own unique playstyles. Your goal is to escape the moon base with all five of these characters intact.

Because the DLC has characteristics in common with roguelikes, you won’t be able to reload a previous save if you die. There are various RNG-based occurrences that make each simulation playthrough unique. Overall, it accomplishes a number of goals in order to address some of the most typical issues with immersive simulations. It’s quite difficult to put everything into words. So why don’t you go ahead and get it for yourself?
