Today is the day for Dungeons & Dragons Online gamers to get their boots muddy, soaked, and buried in mysteries. The Sinister Secrets of Saltmarsh update went live today, bringing with it a marshland full of monsters, a haunting mansion, ten new dungeons, and the Horizon Walker upgrade tree.

In addition to the new content, the patch notes detail changes to the spellcasting system, which make casting more reliable and limit spells from “dry firing” in certain situations; smaller monster perception ranges; a slew of enhancement tree tweaks; and a complete refactor of the Scroll/Seal/Shard crafting system, among other things.

Saltmarsh’s debut also includes a unique Elixer of Discovery item for subscribers, which will be given out to VIPs who check in between today and September 5th. An FAQ explains how to get the item, as well as how to obtain additional bonuses for pre-ordering the mini-expansion/paid update.

Readers may remember that SSG’s LOTRO also issued a paid “mini-expansion” patch last year that sparked outrage among the VIP playerbase. Last February, the studio recognized the blunder, then revealed a week later that Saltmarsh will follow a similar approach anyway, though at least this time it’s making it plain that players may ultimately buy content with points if they’re willing to wait until next February.
