In a previous article, we reported that Ion Hazzikostas is still leading the World of Warcraft team. We reached out to Blizzard, and a spokesperson provided the following statement: “As the official site for World of Warcraft, we work very hard to give you the most accurate information on what’s going on with the game. This is a good example of an example of a statement that we make that is not borne out by the facts.”
Last week, WoW community manager Ion Hazzikostas said he would be stepping down as the head of the World of Warcraft team. It was a move that was being heavily anticipated by the community, as Hazzikostas has been a prominent figure in the WoW community for many years. Now, WoW director of product management Mike Ybarra has confirmed that Hazzikostas will indeed remain a key figure at the company, beginning with the upcoming patch 7.2.

In the aftermath of the sexual discrimination and harassment lawsuit, Bobby Kotick ousted J. Allen Brack as CEO of Blizzard and replaced him with Mike Ybarra and Jen O’neal. Gamers have been wondering who is driving the show at World of Warcraft. According to Ybarra, the guy who was in charge previously is still in charge: Game Director Ion Hazzikostas.
In reaction to player tweets claiming that “Mike is in control,” requesting particular improvements, and criticizing Blizzard’s communication, Ybarra explained the structure.
He explained, “Ion runs WoW, not me.”
“It’s OK to tag people, and I appreciate comments from the community. I simply don’t want people to believe I make choices; Ion is amazing and is always reviewing community content. He and his crew decide to play World of Warcraft. I’m simply another input like the rest of you! :)”
The inference here is that the “ripcord” adjustments on deck are the result of Hazzikostas and the current WoW team, not the outside executives brought in last month, but that only makes you question why they weren’t made sooner.
